The ideal candidate brings deep life/annuity insurance expertise, a strong command of STAT and GAAP frameworks, and the ability to translate complex accounting guidance into clear, actionable recommendations for senior leadership. Ultimately, this high-impact role directly supports financial reporting integrity, capital planning, regulatory compliance, and the company's long-term growth strategy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Statutory Accounting & Blue Book Expertise

    • Lead the statutory reporting framework, and consequently prepare, review, and interpret Blue Book schedules and disclosures.
    • Research and resolve complex SSAP questions; moreover, prepare clear, well-supported technical accounting positions for internal and external stakeholders.
    • Monitor NAIC updates, SSAP revisions, RBC guidance, and regulatory developments; thereafter, assess impacts and advise leadership proactively.
    • Support interactions with state insurance regulators, examiners, and auditors, ensuring accurate and compliant statutory reporting.
  • Reinsurance & Transaction Accounting

    • Serve as the technical accounting expert for reinsurance structures (coinsurance, modified coinsurance, funds-withheld, and other complex arrangements).
    • Evaluate the STAT and GAAP implications of proposed reinsurance treaties and capital transactions; in addition, advise on optimal structuring.
    • Identify embedded derivatives or experience refund considerations and assess their impacts under both GAAP and STAT frameworks.
    • Partner with Product, Actuarial, Investments, and Reinsurance teams to design transaction structures that align with accounting, capital, and regulatory objectives.
  • Asset Admissibility & Investment Accounting

    • Assess asset admissibility under SSAP, including structured investments, private credit, Schedule BA assets, collateral requirements, and non-admitted considerations.
    • Advise on surplus impacts, RBC treatment, and statutory reporting implications of various investment strategies; furthermore, communicate outcomes clearly to leadership.
    • Collaborate with Treasury and Investments to ensure proper classification, valuation, and reporting of investment holdings.
  • Technical Accounting Policy & GAAP

    • Lead the development and ongoing maintenance of the company's accounting policy framework across STAT and GAAP.
    • Provide technical guidance on GAAP topics—including LDTI, DAC, reinsurance accounting, and complex product or investment structures.
    • Draft technical memos, issue analyses, and documentation to support internal controls, audit readiness, and regulatory submissions; moreover, ensure all materials meet a defensible, high-quality standard.
  • Cross-Functional Leadership & Governance

    • Partner with Finance, Actuarial, Product, Operations, Investments, Legal, and senior leadership to ensure aligned and compliant accounting practices.
    • Strengthen financial reporting controls and enhance documentation and governance processes; additionally, promote continuous improvement.
    • Support capital planning, financial modeling, and strategic initiatives by providing technical accounting insights and scenario analysis.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA required.
  • 10+ years of technical accounting experience at a life/annuity insurance carrier, reinsurer, or insurance-focused public accounting firm.
